Dock Building Basics

Whether you are preparing to build your own dock or hiring a professional marine contractor, understanding a few basic tenets of the industry can go a long way in helping to design & construct a quality project.

Abutments

In marine construction, an abutment refers to the on-shore structure that serves as the main support for your ramp or gangway. Abutments can be constructed from a variety of materials, including rock, concrete, steel, wood or a combination of these materials. The style of abutment for your project will be determined by your local conditions, as well as things like permitting requirements and personal preference. Regardless of style, it is critical that your abutment be strong & suited to the type of project you are building.

Anchoring

There are various ways of anchoring your dock. The type of anchoring system you choose will likely depend upon your local conditions & the expertise available to safely install it. Some of the most popular anchoring options are pipe/piling, drop anchors and stiff-arm anchors. Stiff arms can be separate from your gangway, or might include the gangway itself as a part of the anchoring system. Regardless of type, it is critical that your anchoring system be rated for the structures & environment for which they will be used. When in doubt, always consult a licensed professional.
